Patrol Deputies provide emergency aid and security and protect the life and property of members of the public in Whatcom County. Patrol Deputies respond to requests for information and assistance, and respond to and investigates crimes, motor vehicle accidents, and natural and unnatural deaths. Performs detention of persons, makes arrests, transports prisoners, testifies in court, resolves complaints, controls civil disturbances, and performs crisis intervention. Thoroughly documents activities by report writing. Works both independently and as part of a team.

The basic requirements to be a Deputy Sheriff or Corrections Deputy are:
-Requires a high school diploma or GED
-College-level coursework in the area of corrections, law enforcement, law and justice, police science, or social services is desired, but not required
-Among other special requirements, a successful candidate, must:
-Be a citizen of the United States or lawful permanent resident
-Be at least 21 years of age
-Read and write the English Language
-Have a driver’s license and a driving record that meets County standards
-Become a member of the local collective bargaining unit
-Pass testing administered through Public Safety Testing
-Physical agility testing administered through Public Safety Testing
-Background check
-Physical examination
-Psychological examination
-Polygraph test
-Other civil service examinations
